July 2008 headlines…
Compared with July 2007…
- The average UK household had £130 a week disposable income in July 2008, 9.1% lower than a year earlier
- This equates to the average UK family now being £13 a week worse off compared with July 2007
- The cost of family essentials has risen to £408 per week, driven by the continued rise in inflation
- Inflation on the essential goods for the average UK family reached 5.1% in July
- Family budgets were squeezed by a 12.3% rise in the cost of food and non–alcoholic drinks over the year to July 2008–as global commodity prices remain close to record highs
- The cost of transport rose by 8.0% over the year as fuel prices soared
- All UK regions saw their income tracker fall
- The lowest income groups saw the largest proportionate fall in their income tracker as the cost of essential items makes up a larger share of their income
