Our team of packaging experts has worked with a range of partners to reduce the amount of waste we produce.
We take our responsibility to reduce waste seriously. That’s why we’re working closely with our suppliers to dramatically cut the amount of packaging we use on our products. We prefer to show our customers the product rather than the packaging.
To reach our target of a 25% reduction by the end of 2008 we have embarked on a complete review of all our own label packaging. The savings we make will help significantly reduce the amount of household rubbish our customers have to throw away each year.
We are also in the process of making it easier for our customers to recycle more of our packaging more often by using materials that are readily recyclable.
In 2005 ASDA was one of the first companies to sign up to the Government’s Courtauld Commitment. We pledged a 10% reduction across ASDA's own label packaging.
We are really proud of the fact that we have already delivered on this promise and now use 18,000 tonnes less packaging each year across our stores.
And we haven’t stopped there. By the end of 2008 we will cut own label food packaging by 25%, removing 47,000 tonnes of excess packaging — the equivalent of more than 6,700 London buses in weight. We have also committed to reduce all our other packaging by 20% by the end of 2008.
We believe that recycling really makes a difference. That’s why we are working hard to ensure that all of ASDA’s packaging is recyclable. We are also promoting the use of more and more recycled content in our packaging.
Sourcing paper from sustainable forests is important, which is why, wherever possible, we use Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper and board packaging, helping us to promote responsible management of the world’s trees.

By the end of 2008 we will cut our own label food packaging by 25%.
ASDA leads the way when it comes to both recycling and clear on–pack labelling for our customers. Our aim is to make every piece of our own label packaging recyclable.
We were the first supermarket to start putting new packaging recycling instructions on our products, ensuring that every packaging component is clearly identified with simple recycling instructions.

ASDA are pioneering a new labelling method to help people recycle more.
