Transport & distribution

We offer our customers a fantastic choice of products delivered to our stores in a sustainable way.

Sustainable distribution

From the farmers’ fields to the shelves in our stores, we’re making every aspect of our supply chain as efficient as possible. This not only reduces costs and saves resources–it also means that we can pass savings back to our customers. That’s why we’ve set ourselves the goal of cutting our fleet’s total emissions by 40% before the end of 2009.

To help us achieve this goal, we have put in place dozens of innovations throughout our supply chain since 2005, which continue to yield fantastic results. For example, by the end of 2007 we had saved an incredible 43 million road miles — the equivalent to 50,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

In two years we saved an incredible 43 million road miles.

By road

By encouraging our local suppliers to pool their efforts and deliver their goods to one local site — or distribution hub — we are steadily reducing the mileage of our lorries. In fact, in 2007 alone, these hubs saved around seven million road miles.

And it’s not just how we transport goods that’s come under scrutiny — we’ve also been examining what we use too. For example, by the end of 2007 we’d raised the total of double–decked trailers from zero to 53. This will continue to rise throughout 2008 as we add 25 more trailers, leading to an annual reduction of more than five million road miles.

Pulling these trailers are 246 new automatic trucks which collectively save 354,000 litres of fuel a year compared to similar vehicles with manual gearboxes. And, to ensure high fuel performance and low particulates, we always insist on using the very latest technology.

By rail and sea

We were one of the first retailers to switch to using rail in our distribution network, since then we’ve been working to encourage other retailers and official bodies to get on board and endorse the use of rail.

Rail is a better alternative to road freight because it can be shared by several retailers or suppliers, helping to maximise each journey. In fact, each of our trains already saves 26 return truck journeys for each run that it makes.

Our recently opened rail route from Tilbury to Normanton has helped us remove half a million road miles off our total each year.

2007 also saw us go one step further with the opening of our sea port facility in Teesside. By sending 70% of our non-food imports directly to the North by sea, rather than via Southern ports like Felixstowe and then by road, we are cutting a further 2.5 million road miles each year.
